Prayer Request
In recent days, the therapists that are working with Dustin daily have noted some improvements in his responsiveness (to verbal and painful stimuli). However, there has been hard news this week from the insurance company: given Dustin’s current condition (on a trach and not sufficiently responsive) insurance will not pay for the facility he is currently in–or one like it–after January 31. As well, he is not responsive enough to qualify for other more aggressive rehab facilities.
The social worker at the hospital here in Travelers Rest is bringing in someone from outside this hospital to evaluate Dustin’s condition and make a recommendation to the insurance company about his qualifications for care. If Dustin “performs well” and the evaluator writes a good recommendation, then the insurance company might pay for Kindred in Forth Worth, TX–what we’re hoping for. If things at the evaluation do not ‘go well,’ the insurance company will most likely cease any kind of payment after January 31 and payment for all of Dustin’s care would then have to come ‘out of pocket.’
One way or the other, Leigh Anne is planning on relocating the family to the Fort Worth, Texas area by the end of January or shortly thereafter.
There is much to pray about in these days:
- Dustin’s evaluation (most likely to take place next week)
- God’s provision of payment for Dustin’s care (contributions can still be made to the “Dustin Salter Care” fund through Reformed Universities Ministries, www.ruf.org, online or thru the mail)
- the moving process
- Leigh Anne’s wisdom and endurance in decision making
- the kids and all of the transitions currently in their lives
Trusting the good shepherd.

Leigh Anne~
We will certainly be praying about all of these things. Please, please, please let me entertain the kids any day, any time to help you out once you are here. I owe you one and my boys would LOVE to have any or all of your kids for playmates! Please know that both John and I are eager to do anything we can for you, though I know you will have lots of offers of help when you get back here. We will specifically pray that all things will work out with coverage from the insurance company and Dustin can continue to receive the care and rehab he needs for a full recovery.
With much love,
Jennifer

The only thing that comes to mind after reading this are the words to the hymn “Be still my soul”. Praying for strength, peace and wisdom.

LeighAnne,
You don’t know me but I have written before. My husband is in a similar condition as Dustin (my husband’s injury was 10/28/06) and is in Kindred Hospital Denver where I work.
I will be praying that Dustin will continue to improve and that transfer to Kindred will be possible. My whole family is following your husband’s progress and praying for you and your family. We will specifically pray for this upcoming insurance eval and for God’s Provision of the finances you need to care for Dustin.
May God continue to give you strength, hope and wisdom.

Dear Leigh Anne,
You don’t know me either. But I’m the one who’s dad was in somewhat the same situation over 50 years ago. In fact, I just sent you a copy of an article he wrote several years after he recovered. You should be getting it by now.
I’m just so grateful you’ve a place to return to where you’ve family and friends. But, of course, it’s just unaffordable out of pocket.
That’s the irony of improved medical technology–buying better medical care at affordable rates to cover much more difficult situations. Funerals were a lot cheaper–but think of how many lives weren’t saved, let alone restored.
One of my prayers, besides Dustin’s healing whether here or there, is that you’ll remember your time in South Carolina as one of simply being with another branch of Christ’s loving family. And, of course, that God does give provision for finances, not only for the move back to Texas, but his on-going care as well.
So very much love to you,
Fran Froelich

Leigh Anne,
Yesterday, I went to have my oil changed at G&M Tires on South Hills. Dustin was the one who referred me to the place right after Meredith was born. I’ve been going there for service ever since. I told the owner, George Salinas, about Dustin’s accident, his current condition, and that you’re moving back to town. He told me to let you know that he will help you with your car–knowing George, I’m sure he meant free service. Just let him know who you are. Of Dustin he said, “He’s such a nice guy.”
I look forward to your return and a Scrabble game,
J

Please know that PCA churches are praying for Dustin and your whole family way up here in Alberta, Canada. (We are former Texans too.) My husband has prayed for you all in church and made the people of our congregation aware of some of the need for prayer.
Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Nancy Doud

The Lord will sustain you during this hectic time of returning to Texas and dealing with these many weighty issues. He is the Blessed Controller of all things, even as we are in the dark about all his working.
Much love, deep sympathy and continued prayer.

Leigh Anne,
Please know that I am available for free babysitting as you need it. I know we have many families here that the children can stay with but if you ever just want someone to come to the house to help with them, please don’t hesitate to call, even at the last minute or in the middle of the night. You know I love you and will be here for you guys when you get back. I wish you were coming back under better circumstances.
Will also be available to help you unpack and get organized if you need it.
Much love and prayers,
Cynthia

Hey Leigh Anne,
This is Darren White. I was in RUF while Dustin was there, and I’ve always considered him a very special man in my life. I have been, and will continue to pray for these things you’ve mentioned.

Leigh Anne-
I am still praying. I can’t say it was wonderfully therapeutic for me to see you and Dustin over break, and I doubt I was much of a comfort to you, but maybe that wasn’t the point. I am glad I was able to be there at least for a little while.
Please, please get in touch when you know some details about your move back. I have a lot of schedule flexibility, and I would love to help out in any practical ways you need - help with the move, running errands, anything. I am at your disposal.
grace and peace

Leigh Anne,
“What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen! It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see.” Hebrews 11:1 When I read this verse, I think of you and Dustin and the hope we have in our prescious Lord Jesus for your situation. I think of you often and earnestly pray for you strength and support. I’ve even dreamed of Dustin being healed completely a couple of times and it makes me smile in hope. I am so excited to to know you will be heading back to Texas and I am even more hopeful to see faith become reality for you as the Lord gives you a testimony that will always show His love and faithfulness.
Praying for you,
Ginger

Hi Leigh Anne,
Metrocrest Presbyterian Church continues to lift you up in prayer through various members and special prayer times. Our hearts are still with you and your family. Welcome back to the great state of Texas! Now my prayers won’t have so far to travel as I live north of Ft. Worth.
We will continue praying to the Father for extra measures of grace and answers to specific requests for Dustin’s care, financial concerns, strength for you to make the right decisions, the children’s upholding by the Lord and the hassle of moving. All will fall into place one step at a time to God’s glory. …..Donna Lochridge

Leigh Anne,
Just want you to know that we are still with you in thought and prayer. I think I would have made the same decision that you have made - to move back to Texas. I hope that every step in this move will in some way show you that you have made the best decision for you and your family. I am praying for a favorable evaluation of Dustin, as well as for full recovery. You have my love, sympathy and prayers.

Leigh Anne,
I haven’t seen you or heard much since Christmas day, but MT & I are praying for you and your family faithfully. We love you and are continually pleading before the Lord on your behalf.
We are coming to town this weekto see my mother, and MT is excited to see Sarah as well. Hopefully we will see you in the process.
love,
Doug (& MT)
PS - You were right by the way–we did not play any tennis while we were gone. We took some walks but never made it to the tennis courts.

Hi Leigh Anne,
I know as moving day approaches things are getting more and more hectic. I’m just praying that the Lord will smooth out the path to Ft. Worth in every aspect of your move. Tony and I are available for moving-in help, watching the kids, cleaning—what ever you need. We’re at Arlington PCA now, and you are all prayed for constantly. Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Love to the Salters,
Cindy and Tony
