Well, the journey’s ended, but not in the way or time you and all of us hoped it would. Dustin is, of course, now healed–but not on earth as we all hoped and prayed it was. In some ways, this is where the real work begins. This is where you, and all who’ve walked beside you, must lean on God for strength for this phase of the journey thru this new, undesired stage of your life.
There’ll be seasons of grief. Not one can be sidestepped if you’re to come out sanely on the other side. No amount of drugs, booze, or other escapes can do anything more than mask it for a moment.
They must be faced: sanely, soberly, and most of all honorably. You know the importance of setting your face “like flint” against adversity. And it’ll be the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do.
But for now, just rest, take it easy, catch your breath, spend time with the kids. You and they still have each other, and that’s such a great blessing. Years ago, there was a rock song that said in part, “And when I die/and when I’m gone/there’ll be one child born to carry on/to carry on”. How lucky you are that you have three!
And how fortunate you are that you’ve a wealth of supportive family and friends. One of my prayers has been, not only for strength and peace for you and the kids, but for them as well. For your journey is theirs as well. And those who stay will also have something to be tremendously proud of, esp. in this desert stage.

I wish we could all gather together at Dustin’s funeral and give testimony to how you and your family have ministered to us even in your time of crisis. Leigh Anne, just wanted to let you know along with all the others you and your family will be in my prayers, especially your children. I remember my favorite teaching of Beth Moore, where she talks about Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast,because he trusts in you.” She said it is you (and me) who lays your head on our Father’s lap, He places His hand upon your head and applies His thoughts to yours. Beth said it was applying the “how to think about the what.” So in your situation right now, you lay your head on God’s lap and let Him tell you just how to think about what He’s allowed. God’s Word promises that in His economy, it will bring about good. That may not be where you are today…and I don’t blame you. But I pray that He carries you faithfully (as it is in His character to do), until you can walk holding His hand.
I pray many, many (countless) ones will know Christ in their hearts because of your testimony!

Dear Leigh Anne,
As many others have said, I have never met you and probably never will on this earth. But I have prayed daily for you through Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines Day and now through the funeral. My heart aches for you, your children and other family members. Our Lord promises that his grace is sufficient for thee. Your faith has made an impact on many lives and I know it will continue. I pray that our heavenly father will fill the void of your husband and your children’s earthly father. May you rest knowing Dustin is rejoicing in heaven with the father he served while here on earth.

Leigh Anne, I have thought of you and your children constantly these past days and all day yesterday. Please know that prayers are still abundant and will continue to be. I do hope we will get updates on your family.
Again, McLean Rorebeck is my daughter’s Furman roommate, Jordan Greene. I now pray for McLean and Matt’s safe return to S.C. from Texas and the same for all those heading in different directions as they leave you.

Dear Leigh Anne, Nathan, Jacob, and Meredith,
My husband and I had the pleasure of getting to know your [husband, father] during our 4 years at TCU, where we regularly attended RUF. As you know, He had a passion for ministry, and made everyone he met feel like a cherished friend. Before we married, almost two years ago, my husband Alex met with him several times to discuss what was expected of a Christian husband, and they had even talked about the possiblility of him coming to Houston to marry us. Even though it didn’t work out legistically, that memory of his willingness to participate in our union comforts us to this day. May the Lord comfort you during this trying time, knowing that your [husband, father] is looking down from Heaven to comfort us all.

What can I say? I have never met you, yet I have a great love for each of you! It has been a long and difficult road, yet you have all walked it bravely and with great faith. Dustin has left such an incredible, godly legacy! I have so often been reminded of the legacy that Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, and the other missionaries that were killed by the Waodani left - and the incredible miracles that followed their death. Although it is so difficult to reconcile, I know that God WILL, even in Dustin’s death, continue to use Dustin and each of you to bring glory to Himself. You have been so faithful to Him - He will be ever so faithful to you! My love and my continued prayers are with you.

Oh my goodness, Leigh Anne!!! I have just had the opportunity to listen to Dustin’s sermon on Providence. How wonderful it was. How ironic it was! I just cried and cried. God’s hand is on you, girl!! I cannot stop praying for you. There is not a day that goes by that I am not thinking of you and asking God to make his presence known to you. I’m so glad that I got to listen to Dustin’s message. What an awesome man he was. — I understood what he meant about Livingston. That just made me chuckle to myself. It is where I met my soulmate as well, but also wonderful friends like you. Even though we don’t get to talk that much or see each other very often, I care so much for you and your family. You guys will always be special to us.
